How To Make Wise Decisions
Do you know, according to statistics, you make approximately 300 decisions each day?
What time will I get up? Will I hit the snooze button when the alarm rings? What will I wear today? What will I have for breakfast? What will I tackle first at work? And on it goes. Decision after decision after decision.
And of those 300 decisions, perhaps 10% of them will have potentially lifelong consequences: Which relationships should I pursue? What course should I pursue? Is it time to start a family? Should I consider that job offer? Do I try to beat this red light? =)
As you consider all your options, you are going to draw from some well to make your choices.
Here’s the question: Into which well will you send down your bucket? If it is not the right well, beware. You may end up with unnecessary heartaches and regrets.
That is why we desperately need to draw from the well of God’s Word:
James 1:5 – “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”
God promises to give us wisdom as we linger in His Word. As God’s Word becomes a part of you, increasingly you will know that this is the right decision to make or that is the right thing to say. You will not only know what is right and wrong, but more significantly what is wise and what is foolish.
I want to encourage you to use a Bible Reading Plan because it ensures that you read through the Bible systematically. This week, we will be starting 1 and 2 Kings. As the name indicates, these books record the history of the Jewish kings, from Solomon to Zedekiah. When the account begins, the nation is one (1 Kings 1–11). After Solomon’s death, it divided (1 Kings 12–22); then both kingdoms went into captivity (2 Kings). Israel was a nation greatly blessed by God, and yet it ended in disgrace and defeat. How did it all happen? And what does it mean for your life?
If you desire wise counsel, join me to seek, hear, and heed the advice of these divine mentors. The Prophet Daniel is right: “The people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits.”
